Golden Rules

Group Picture

One
Control and Passing
When controlling the ball, get behind it and in line with it, cushion the impact and don't let it bounce away. Control the ball around you, not underneath you, and stay relaxed. Keep looking around. If defenders approach, shield the ball if you have to and use your "disguises". Try to pass forward, but keep possession and play simple, early passes if necessary. Simply - pass and support. (Beware of square passes, as they can be intercepted).

Two
Turning with the Ball
Turn away from your opponent, shielding the ball then speed away or pass.

Three
Shielding the Ball
Be half turned, play the ball with the foot furthest from your opponent, keep well balanced, be positive, get away! Try to face up your opponent.

Four
Shooting
Technique, accuracy and power - in that order! Watch the foot actually strike the ball, keep your head still. Prepare for a first time shot.

Five
On Losing Possession
Nearest player to the opponent with the ball, close down, don't "dive in", force one way, be patient, get closer, try to "nick" the ball and...stay on your feet!

Six
Heading
Meet the ball with your forehead, eyes on the ball. 75% of the time you will have to compete for the ball. Timing is of great importance.

Seven
Small Sided Games
1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4. This is the beginning of play, don't crowd the ball but support each other, keep it simple, try to pass forward, look long to play short. Only dribble if you really have to. Shoot at every opportunity!

Be positive!
